A new article published by the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) and co-authored by Coalition Executive Director Dr. Christine Corbett sheds light on the intense symptom burden faced by patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Research indicates that many of these patients suffer from symptoms—including debilitating fatigue, chronic pain, and severe depression—that often exceed the levels reported by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. However, kidney patients are significantly less likely to receive adequate symptom management, highlighting a critical gap in current nephrology care.

The article provides guidance for clinicians to bridge this symptom management gap through kidney supportive care. By utilizing validated assessment tools and adopting a shared decision-making approach, healthcare providers can better align treatments with patient values. The guidance covers both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies for managing a wide range of issues, from Restless Legs Syndrome and neuropathic pain to the psychosocial impacts of fear and trauma.
